Welcome to Renaissance Drum and Bugle Corps! I will be your host...no, really.... My name is Chalet Harris and I am the director of Renaissance Drum and Bugle Corps. We are located in York, PA. We are a relatively small community that sits about 30 minutes south of Harrisburg, our state capital, and about 1 hour north of Baltimore.
For a little history (BTW, this would be great for all of you who want to join the craziness of starting a corps. You can learn from our successes and mostly from our mistakes.)...
These have been exciting years for us! We formed Renaissance Foundation for the Performing Arts, Inc. in 2002. Myself, my husband Brian and our dear friend Judy began the project. We formed a "umbrella" organization so that we could create multiple programs to run beneath the Renaissance umbrella. The first project was a drum and bugle corps. Needless to say, it takes time to do this right. Considering that we only had experience marching in corps and teaching band, the whole organizational element was foreign to us. This didn't stop us from jumping in head first. We know the value a corps can have on its members. We have lived it first hand.
St. Patrick's Day Parade The first year (2003) we had an indoor drum line. The line included color guard and we competed with a local circuit. We won with a 92.2. The next year, we had a stand still indoor program. The following year, last summer, we fielded a parade corps. We were small but we reached out to the community. This is an important step, obviously.
This year we will be putting together two neat projects. During the winter months, our percussion will be putting together an indoor line to compete in TIA Independent (local circuit). The corps will come into rehearse in the winter as well. We will be fielding a show this summer that we will take to local shows to perform.
DCI has rules regarding admission into the organization. They want to be sure that you are progressing in such a way that will benefit the corps. Personally, we welcome this. It makes us dot our "i"'s and cross our "t"'s. We want to be around, so we don't mind if it takes a few years to get there. DCI does have a DIV III venue which is perfect for smaller corps in development.
Don't get your hopes up but barring some miracle, we will not be attending Championships in Madison. We will stay local within our neighboring states until we are ready to venture out. We will do parades and performances around the area. We will try to get the field show out as many times as possible.
For those interested in marching, and you are all welcome if you are under 21, please email me from our contact page. You will want to include your name, address, birthdate, section interested in, marching experience and phone numbers.
For those over 21 that would like to be involved, you can email me as well and we will find a way for you to help. If you do not live locally, and would like to send a donation, you can do so on paypal to the address director@renaissancedbc.com. (your dollars spend in PA just like they do in the rest of the country).
Staff alert: We are looking for visual and brass techs to be on the field. These are volunteer positions (as are all of our positions for the time being). Major need is to be around for the summer. The more experience the better. email me. We also will need support staff (sewing, cooking, driving, nurse, etc)
Donation alert: We are in need of a marimba and horns.
Welcome to Drum Corps in PA! I promise not to talk so much next time. (hee hee, those who know me are laughing right now). As a band parent says in our band (Bishop McDevitt), all comments may be blithly ignored, but loved.
BISHOP MCDEVITT ROCK THE HOUSE TOMORROW! BREAK A REED! TOES UP!
